DIY Electrolyte Boost

Updated: Jul 2

As the days get warmer, staying hydrated becomes more than just a wellness tip - it’s an essential part of feeling good, especially during midlife. You may be surprised by how easily you can become dehydrated and how much it can affect how we feel day to day.

Hormonal changes, particularly the decline in estrogen, can interfere with your body’s ability to regulate temperature, retain important fluids and maintain electrolyte balance. That means in hot weather, symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, headaches, brain fog and irritability can sneak up on you faster than you think.

Even mild dehydration can sap your energy and slow down your metabolism. And let’s not forget its effect on your skin, digestion and even joint comfort. In midlife, the simple act of staying well hydrated becomes one of the most powerful (and underrated) tools in your wellness toolkit. 🧰

Electrolytes: While water is essential, when you're sweating more or feeling depleted, adding electrolytes can help your body absorb and use that water more effectively. And you don’t need expensive drinks full of artificial sweeteners to get them. In fact I recommend you steer clear of them! (You can find my electrolyte drink recipe below.)

⚡ What Are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals in your body that carry an electric charge. They’re essential for a wide range of functions, including:

💧 Hydration – they help your body absorb and retain water

🧠 Nerve function – they allow nerves to send signals properly

💪 Muscle function – they help muscles contract and relax

❤️ Heart rhythm – they support a steady, healthy heartbeat

⚖️ pH balance – they keep your body’s internal environment stable

🧂 Common Electrolytes:

  • Sodium – helps balance fluids and supports nerve/muscle function

  • Potassium – supports heart health, muscle contractions, and hydration

  • Magnesium – involved in hundreds of body processes, including muscle and nerve health

  • Calcium – not just for bones, but also helps muscles and nerves work properly

🥥 Electrolyte Drink Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 litre cold filtered water

  • ¼ cup unsweetened coconut water (natural source of potassium)

  • Juice of ½ lemon or lime (vitamin C + flavour)

  • ¼ tsp sea salt or pink Himalayan salt (sodium + trace minerals)

  • 1 tsp maple syrup or raw honey (for a gentle glucose boost – optional)

Instructions: Add all ingredients to a large water bottle or jug. Stir or shake until everything is well combined. Chill and sip throughout the day, especially if you’ve been out in the heat or after exercise.

Staying on top of your hydration, especially with the help of natural electrolytes, can help you feel clearer, lighter and more energised through the summer months.
