Menopause Is Not Weight Gain - It’s Muscle Loss

If you’ve noticed your body changing in your late 40s or early 50s, you’re not alone. You may feel softer, heavier, or like your clothes just don’t fit the same way. And the first thought?
“My metabolism has crashed!!!”
Here’s the thing: it probably hasn’t. 😅
What’s Really Happening
As oestrogen starts to decline during menopause, women naturally lose muscle mass. And muscle isn’t just about tone - it’s the very tissue that helps your body burn energy, regulate blood sugar and help you keep your shape.
So what can feel like sudden weight gain is often:
Gradual muscle loss
Slight drop in daily energy burn
Your body adapting to new hormonal rules
Why Cardio Alone Isn’t Enough
You may have been told to eat less or run more. But if muscle loss is the main issue, cardio or dieting alone won’t fix it. In fact, relying solely on running can actually make things harder:
Extra stress on joints if you’re carrying extra weight
More cortisol release, which can slow fat loss
Little stimulus for maintaining or rebuilding muscle

The Midlife Shift You Need to Know
There are three key physiological changes that happen in midlife:
Declining oestrogen → reduced muscle protein synthesis
Reduced insulin sensitivity → your body handles energy differently
Lower recovery capacity → muscles need more support
Understanding this helps you stop blaming your metabolism — and start taking action that actually works.
The Reset Approach
So, what works? Focus on rebuilding and maintaining muscle:
Strength training 2-4 times a week
Adequate protein to support muscle repair
Sleep & recovery to regulate hormones
Stress management to keep cortisol in check
Progressive overload - gradually increase strength challenges
So, instead of making it about restriction or punishment we need to switch to building a strong, resilient body.
